Coal-based activated carbon for water purification:

Types of coal-based activated carbon for water purification

1 .Coal Crushing Granular Activated Carbon

Raw coal crushed granular activated carbon is an amorphous granular activated carbon product, which is used for deep purification of drinking water. It only needs to meet a certain particle size range. The particle size is usually 8×30 mesh or 12×40 mesh.

Raw coal crushed charcoal has the advantages of simple process and high cost performance. However, raw coal crushed carbon has the disadvantages of rapid strength decline, low regeneration rate, high floating rate, and difficult to control pore structure and surface characteristics.

2.Coal columnar activated carbon

Coal-based columnar granular activated carbon is widely used to adsorb gases. 1.5 mm coal-based columnar granular activated carbon is used in the ozone activated carbon advanced treatment process in water plants. By rolling columnar granular activated carbon into smaller amorphous particles, the surface film-hanging ability, adsorption performance and filtration performance of columnar activated carbon are effectively improved, and good application results are achieved.

Coal-based columnar activated carbon has good adsorption performance and regeneration performance, and its strength can also meet the requirements of water purification treatment. However, as columnar granular activated carbon is a shaped activated carbon, its surface is smooth and its ability to biofilm is limited. Moreover, binders such as tar/asphalt need to be added during the processing, which increases the manufacturing cost. Moreover, additives may bring some harmful substances during use, which can easily have adverse effects on the purified water products of municipal water plants. Therefore, the limitations of columnar granular activated carbon in water purification applications have become increasingly prominent.

3. coal-based powdered activated carbon

Coal-based powdered activated carbon is a by-product in the production process of coal-based granular activated carbon. It is made from sieved activated carbon particles by grinding, and its cost performance is usually very high.

The advantages of powdered activated carbon are low equipment cost, fast adsorption rate, quick onset of action, ability to cope with sudden or short-term changes in water quality, and good cost performance. However, powdered activated carbon is limited by its physical properties and can only be used once and is almost impossible to regenerate. It will produce solid pollutants after use and has high disposal costs. It is also prone to carbon loss during water treatment and backwashing. Therefore, powdered activated carbon is generally used in short-term seasonal water treatment and less in long-term deep purification treatment.

4 .Coal briquettes and crushed granular activated carbon

Coal-quality briquette crushed granular activated carbon is a product that further improves the deep purification treatment performance of activated carbon water based on the research, production and application of raw coal crushed granular activated carbon and columnar granular activated carbon. Briquetted and crushed carbon is an activated carbon product made by blending and grinding high-quality weakly cohesive coal, bituminous coal and other raw coals, using the coal's own cohesiveness to briquette, and then performs carbonization and activation processing, and finally crushes it according to needs.

Compared with columnar granular activated carbon, briquetting and crushing granular activated carbon is formed by using the self-adhesive briquetting of raw coal. It does not need to add a binder and has high reactivity. It is easy to develop micropores and mesopores, which is similar to raw coal granular activated carbon. Compared with briquetting and crushing granular activated carbon, it can be produced by blending coal, which facilitates the adjustment of the pore structure and strength of activated carbon products and is beneficial to the purification application of activated carbon. Briquetted activated carbon products have low floating rate and high strength, which are more suitable for liquid phase treatment. The quality of briquetted activated carbon products is stable and controllable, the process is relatively mature, it has good adsorption performance, regeneration performance and low production cost. It is currently the most popular product. The best choice for deep purification treatment process in municipal water plants.
